help! I can't receive email on my laptop at home

G

Greg B

here's the error message.

The connection to the server has failed. Account:
'shawmail.ed.shawcable.net', Server: 'shawmail.ed.shawcable.net', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E

I can send not receive. I've uninstalled McAfee with their removal tool.
I've been on tech support with my home ISP - Telus and work ISP - Shaw.
They've checked and rechecked my settings.

Are you away from home, using a non-Shaw Internet connection?
If so, that seems to be a Shaw limitation. Read this thread:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14565891

If you are at home, it is possible that the account is corrupted.
Delete the account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

I found the answer. With Windows Vista you have to first enable Telnet
Connection. Everything works fine after that. I can access Shaw email from
home (Telus ADSL connection with the correct pop3 and smtp settings. Has
nothing to do with Av apparently.

Not sure what you mean by enabling "Telnet Connection". I use
Telnet quite a bit (to test mail servers); the only pertinent setting in Vista
is to enable the "Telnet Client" under "Turn Windows features on or off."
It should not have any bearing on normal mail client operation.
Are you talking about a third party firewall setting?

Sorry, this is whole new world to me...

Yes, I mean "Telnet Client". I enabled it by putting the check mark in the
box and restarting the computer and it worked. I can send (I could before)
and now receive emails on Windows Mail. In the thread link you sent me people
were saying that you could not download your email from Shaw using a Telus
ADSL line. It's working for me now.

Is it possible that "Telnet Client" turned off blocks the downloading of
email?

I'm not aware of any interaction between the Telnet Client and the
ability to receive emails. It may have been just a coincidence for you.
Try unchecking the Telnet Client.
If downloading email from a Telus ADSL line really was impossible,
we'd be inundated with such problem reports here. Normally the type
of Internet connection has no bearing on the ability to receive email.

Telnet is software for a smart computer such as a PC to emulate a dumb
terminal. It sure seems very unlikely to me also that it is relevant to
receiving emails.
