I'm new to Windows vista and checking this discussion group see some similar
problems with error message.

here's a copied message i keep receiving when trying to use windows mail:

The connection to the server has failed. Account:
'shawmail.ed.shawcable.net', Server: 'shawmail.ed.shawcable.net', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10013, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E

I've gone through my internet provider and checked all my settings - they
couldn't help and suggested it was a windows vista problem. I'm using Trent
Micro Internet security and it works well to access from home from work
accounts, and i need to use it for that. however, i'm wondering if that's
what's causing my windows mail problems. Any suggestions from others who've
been able to solve this one?

Thanks in advance

Have you verified your server names and port settings with shawcable?

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
The only way you can prove or disprove that your antivirus is the culprit is to
uninstall it, reboot, then try Windows Mail again.
If you decide to replace your antivirus, there are free antivirus programs
which are more compatible with Windows Mail.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

Thanks for your help. I was afraid that's what it might be, and since I have
to run Trend (required by my office if i want access to my work files from
home) guess I'll have to stick with using web mail. Very frustrating!!
