Now the computer cannot boot to safe mode but only shows a microsoft emblem
When I tried recovery console, it ask for administrator password which I never hadp
put in any place before

so now when I restart all I get is a picture of windows

How do I repair the registry? Is there a way to reinstall the clsid folder?
Is there a way to get back to a working restore point even when windows xp
does not restart? thanks for all help

Wow! Some people should NOT be allowed to even enter the registry.

Do a repair install. Then, download and install all Window Updates. Then,
reinstall ALL your programs and software. If this was a store bought machine
with a lot of preinstalled software, those likely will not work.

You will then have to use the supplied CD's to put your system back to the
way it was when you purchased it.

thanks for quick reply, when I start winxp, iyou can see it loading up
then it goes to a window screen and only the mouse works?
is repair install really a reinstall of winxp?
thanks

Thanks for quick response, winxp actually loads up and the mouse still works but I
just cant boot to safemode. When I try the F8 key winxp just loads up and cant get
safe mode. IS there any procedure I can access the recovery console , I mean is there a utility disk I can download to repair the clsid folder registry? winxp loads up but does not continue to load up where the icons show up.
thanks again

You have to repeatedly tap the F8 key right after the BIOS screen, just
as the Windows boot screen appears. However, it sounds like XP has
successfully booted, so the best recourse of choosing "Last Known Good"
configuration probably won't work now.

There is a painful procedure to extract the latest restore point from
the SVI folder. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545. It's a
multi-step process of extracting the original registry files from the
install using Recovery Console, then booting Windows, gaining access to
SVI, and extracting the registry files from the highest numbered RPnnn
folder, moving them to %windir%, and then running Recovery Console again
to restore these registry files. But it works.
