Help! How can the driver for a plug & play adapter be removed?

Try this. Uninstall the driver files for the adapter. Turn off the
computer. Remove the adapter. Turn computer back on. Delete the driver
file permanently. If this does not work, then changes to the Windows
Registry will become necessary.
