no display adapter in device manager

I upgraded my motherboard and video card and after performing a repair
installation I cannot install the new video drivers for my ATI card. It tells
me to set up my display adapter with a standard VGA driver before installing
new drivers but when I go to device manager there IS NO DISPLAY ADAPTER
LISTED! When I go to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter >
Properties > Driver, there is an adapter named VgaSave and the current status
is started with Start button greyed out and a Stop button available. Startup
type drop down menu has System selected from list which includes: Automatic,
Boot, Demand and Disabled. There is also a Driver details button that is
greyed out. When I go back to Device Manager and select Show hidden devices I
find VgaSave under Non-Plug and Play Drivers. I tried a few things: 1) I used
Add/Remove programs to remove all display driver entries which failed "unable
to locate installation log file" 2) I ran a program called RegCleaner and
removed all video driver entries, then rebooted. 3) I went to Non-Plug and
Play Drivers in Device manager and uninstalled VgaSave and rebooted. 4) I
shut down the pc, removed and reinstalled new video card and restarted. 5)
Still no display adapter in Device manager and still unable to install new
drivers so I performed a second repair installation, nothing changed except
now my network adapter is not working! The latest suggestion I have been
given is to restart in Last Known Good Configuration mode. If anyone can
point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Unless there are specific instructions which suggest otherwise, included in
the User Guide you can try this.

Use Device Manager and delete the Display Adapter [default as listed].

Reboot and when Xp identifies a 'new' hardware device show it the new drivers.

Hi,

Go to ATI website to download a utility tool for complete removal of
previous ATI stuffs from the system. Read the instruction carefully for how
to use the utility tool.
I prefer you to print it out before doing anything.
Download the latest catalyst drivers for your ATI card and save it to a
specific folder for later use.

ATI link:https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?
deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Below is part of the removal instructions, you can get it from the above link:
2) Removal Instructions
a) Go to Add/Remove Programs located in the Windows Control Panel
b) Run the ATI Software Uninstall Utility. Restart the machine once prompted.
c) (Should this utility not be present, it can be downloaded from the
CATALYST?- ATI Maintenance Utilities page.
d) Remove the DAO/MDAC component and any remaining ATI software from
Add/Remove Programs
e) Should items fail to remove, select the appropriate link below for ways
on manually deleting items from the registry.
Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310750

Now, ensure the display resolution is now in VGA mode. Follow the
instructions to run the removal tool to remove the previous ATI stuffs in the
system.
After the removal of the ATI stuffs, reboot the PC.
Now, install the chipset drivers of the new mobo. The VGA drivers should be
also in the CD of the new mobo. If yes, install it. Reboot the PC again.
Go to device manager and look for the display adapter. It should show VGA
adapter in the device manager and should not have any yellow/red exclamation
mark on it.
Now, disable any antiVirus softwares that running at the background. Open
the specific folder for the downloaded ATI catalyst drivers and run it. Do
not disturb until it complete the installation and prompted you to restart
the PC.
After then reboot, the ATI drivers should be successfully installed. adjust
the display resolution to your desire.

Hope it helps.

Peter.
