Robert

I had some kind of error occur and now a number of files are locked so I
can't copy or use them. When I try, I get a message saying the disk is full
or they are in use even though they are not.

The same problem occurs in safe mode.

How can I copy them to another drive/location?

Robert,

I looked on Microsoft's website and found many articles pertaining to not
being able to open/copy files, but not sure which one applied. You could try
giving us more details, such as what types of files they are, where and how
you are trying to copy them, maybe the exact error msg. You could also go to
Microsoft.com and search.

Thanks.

I'll give that a try.

The files are mpeg videos created by Sony's Gigapocket. What I normally do
is go inside the Gigapocket folder and copy them to another drive so that I
can edit them. However, I inadvertently moved them to another directory on
the same drive. When I undid the move, the Gigapocket file system locked
them up and I can't do anything with them. Some of these files are long
videos from TV, and I can't recreate them, so I really need to solve this.

Over the years, I have had occasional times when Windows XP Home locks files
and it is nearly impossible to copy or otherwise recover them. In the old
days, you could go into DOS mode and recover files, but with WinXP and NTFS
I can't use real DOS to recover.

It would be nice if there were some utility to allow unrestricted access to
files so you could recover files which are incorrectly marked as in use...

Hopefully someone has figured out how to do this.

Robert,

You might try moving the files from one directory to another (or back to
the original) using command prompt. Reboot into safe mode with command
prompt, type cd\ to get C:\>(c prompt) if you don't already have it, then
type the following:

move C:/"My Files" C:/"Different Folder" (use quotes if folder name has
spaces)

You can do copy the same way, just sub copy for move

Not sure if that will do it, but could be worth a try.
