Files Fail To Copy on Reinstall Repair

T

Terry Smythe

Suffered a major system crash. Tried to "Repair" following "Install
Windows XP". Within the Copy process following, 59 files refuse to copy
even though they are there on my legal master WinXP SP2 disk. The process
says it can't copy them, even though it sees them, and reports their
presence.

I can boot to Safe Mode (with Networking), but all attempts to Normal Boot
result in the blue screen of death. I've tried "sfc /scannow", but that
fails because a service of some kind is not available.

The last thing I want to do is a clean install, followed by reinstall of ~45
gigs of software.

Thoughts of others?

Sorry to say, this is sometimes an indication of a memory problem. The
file copy fails because data is corrupted in memory during transfer.
Equally unfortunately, it's possible that it isn't the memory modules
themselves causing the problem, but other supporting circuitry, and it's
very difficult to tell without replacements.

If you want to poke at it without putting the existing data at risk, pop out
the existing hard disk and put a new one in and attempt the install there.

It gets worse....... :-( Microsoft's knowledge base indicates this is
a known problem, but offers no fix. A search of the 'net reveals that far
too many people suffer this problem, for it to be a memory problem. If
I could get into normal boot, I could run "sfc /scannow", but so far can't
get into normal boot. Basically, the copy process reports it can seethe
desired file, does report its presence, but refuses to copy it. When the
file name is reported, the file type extension is missing, with no way to
force the extension to be displayed. Yet several hundred other files
are copied across normally. Wierd....

Went through the "Repair" process twice more, each time a different array of
files refuse to copy, some same, some new. Not only that, on most recent
"Repair", the drive letters on my main 4 partition drive emerged as S, T, U,
V! Computer Management would not allow me to change the S: drive to C:,
because it is seen as the boot drive.

Latest problem is that it now refuses to do anything until I activate it,
but when I select activate, all that emerges is an empty activate screen,
refusing to go anywhere or do anything, even when attempting to get into
safe mode. It likely needs one or some of those files that did not get
copied across.

So, I'm once again going through the Repair process, with everything
disconnected, now with a single physical hard drive and DVD drive. Stay
tuned....

Regards,

Terry
