Added EIDE HDD 500gb to home desktop PC want it to be boot drive

I just added a EIDE WD5000 500gb HD and would like it to be my new boot
drive. XP assigned drive E:/. My C:/ was original 10gb drive which is still
in machine. I used manufacturers copy utility and copied all files plus OS
over to new HDD. Now both has OS on them. My PC locks up on startup asking
"A DiskRead Error Occurred".

How do I get it to now boot from E:/ and store all files onto E:?? Once
completed I want to erase C: fully.

Take both drives out, and look on the back for a set of jumpers. There will
be a diagram on the drive, showing you how to set the jumpers in the
patterns for master and slave. Change the old drive from the master pattern
to slave, and the new drive to master. Also, if possible, use the opposite
drive flat cable to connect them to the machine. This makes your new drive
the C: drive, (as the install you copied there demands.) You will then be
able to re-partition the 'old C: / new E: ' drive and format it to start
fresh there.

Mike:
(I'm assuming in all this that you have an XP OS installation CD)...

The simplest (most problem-free) & most straightforward way to accomplish
your objective (at least what I take to be your objective) is to...
1. Disconnect the old 10 GB HDD from the system.
2. Install your new 500 GB HDD in the system using the Primary IDE connector
and jumper it for Cable Select. I assume you know how to connect the IDE
data ribbon cable to it (the end connector).
3. Fresh install the XP OS from the XP installation CD, and in the process
delete the existing partition(s) along the way and then partition/format the
disk.
4. We'll assume the fresh install goes without problems and the 500 GB HDD
is designated as your C: drive.
5. Connect the 10 GB HDD as a secondary HDD in the system, access its
contents after booting to your new boot drive and copy whatever files you
need over to your new boot drive.

Locate the new hard drive manufacturer's utility which should help you
copy all the info from the old hard drive. Then, once the "copy" is
done, you must power down the PC and disconnect both drives. Then,
look at the new 500GB hard drive's jumper settings and set it to
"master." Then,. reconnect the 500GB onto the PC.
