When I start up my computer (win 2000 pro), I get a
message "A disk error occured". It won't do anything
else. I tried using a DOS boot disk and I cannot change
to the C drive....it says there is no c: drive.....not
recognizing c: at all.

If it is a system crash, does anyone know of any backdoor
way for me to recover the files?? Any help would be
appreciated.

Most likely a message returned from your system bios. You might try the
drive manufacturer's web site for a diagnostic utility.

If it's NTFS, your DOS boot disks won't see it as a valid format, so
will think it's non-existant.

Try putting that drive in another Win2K machine and seeing if you can
read it...
