Help - Can't I copy a MS WXP PRO CD???

G

geezer

I had to buy a replacement WXP PRO (full) CD disk from MS because my
original suddenly had read errors.

Having done that, I wanted to avoid this scenario again by quickly
making a clone backup copy of the new CD disk.

Now then - I tried to install WXP fresh from the backup CD and I get a
error code '7' on the i386 file almost immediately. I made two clone
backups - both gave me the same error.

I tried the original CD disk, and it seems to want to intall WXP okay.

What am I doing wrong please?

When you use Windows XP you can record to a CD-ROM,
but Windows XP does not have the user interface (UI) to
enable you to copy another CD-ROM.

You'll need a third-party CD recording program, such as Nero:

You need to use a better CD writing system than the built-in one of XP. It
does not like to work with CD-RW media nor does it allow you to easily copy
CDs.

You have some (magic, perhaps) way of recording to a CD-ROM???

XP has no problems with CD-RWs.

One thing Microsoft hasn't screwed up yet is the ability to make a
backup copy of Windows XP. Since this is a convenience for their
customers, it is only a matter of time before they make it
impossible to copy Windows XP CDs. However, as of now, the CDs
copy without problems.

You already have several good responses to your query. But am wondering if
perhaps the problem is being mis-diagnosed. Perhaps instead of a problem
with CDs there is a hardware problem? The cdrom drive/burner may be in
trouble or there is a problem with faulty RAM. You've had problems with
reading CDs in the past and now are having trouble with getting good CD
copies. At the very least, these are just a few other angles to check if
you continue to have these problems...

I have run into this problem myself with retail and OEM and also NFR CD's and
what i found the only problem was is that when using the CD to do the install
on a CDR drive or DVD-r Drive was when a got the error

If you use DVD Player Only or even a CD Only drive to do the install the
error dose not accure!

| You can not use them as a "huge" floppy disk (a la DirectCD mode)
natively.

That doesn't mean that XP "...does not like to work with CD-RW media." The
XP burning function works as intended, and there was no intention to provide
for packet writing, and for good reason, IMO.
