I had to reinstall my windows xp home w/ sp2 a few days ago. NOW I can not
connect to my charter cable. The techs said my computer has no LAN files and
Dell
would not send me a disk since service time is up. Said get on Utilities
disk on line. I can't get online with that computer , I tried with this lap
top, but find NO LAN set up files on the downloads in the diagonotics utility
that he told me to download.

Can anyone help me restore these files. My hard drives was reformatted and
re partitioned, so all files are gone.

Thanks. I may not find this forum again, so email me if you can too if you
can help get me the LAN or fast internet files back.. thanks

What is a "charter cable"?
Windows XP comes with all files required to make a network
connection. If you supply full details about the type of Internet
connection you have (Dial-up modem? ADSL modem? Cable
Modem? Other?) then someone will assist you in restoring this
connection.

1. DELL was wrong. You need nothing from them.

2. Charter techs were wrong. There is no such thing as "LAN" files.

3. No one will email you. Post here, read here.

4. You need a 12-year-old male to assist you.

Between the use of jargon by Dell and your ISP techs and your (perhaps)
not quite accurate repetition of what they said, it's a bit difficult to
tell exactly what you are missing.

Please start by providing the following info:

1. What version of Windows are you using (XP Home, XP Pro, XP MCE, other)?

2. Do you have just one computer that you want to connect to your cable
or are you trying to connect multiple computers?

3. Assuming that you are using some version of Windows XP, go to:
Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network
Connections. Do you see an icon named "Local Area Connection"? If so,
click it (once); what does it say in the left column of the "Network
Connections" screen under "Details"? Now right click the Local Area
Connection icon and left-click on "Properties". What, if anything, is
listed under the heading "This connection uses the following properties"?

4. If you did not see a "Local Area Connection" icon, then right-click
on "My Computer", left-click on "Properties", select the "Hardware" tab
and click the "Device Manager" button. Is there an entry named "Network
adapters"? Click the + to its left. What do you see? Are there any
yellow exclamation points?

Sexist and condescending snide remarks are not helpful.
If you were required to set up a network connection on
a machine with an OS you're not familiar with (e.g. Linux),
would you appreciate this sort of reply?

Sure, wouldn't you?

Innumerable studies show that males - from birth - are more interested in
the process than the prize, much more fascinated by the path than the
destination.

It is folly to think that males and females are interchangable, no matter
how appealing to the PC sensibilities that may be.

You appear to miss the point. The purpose of this forum is
to HELP people, not to compare the computer literacy of
an adult female with a boy. As I said, your comment did
nothing to solve the OP's problem.
