Heavy Disc Accrss with Vista Business

Hi there,

Just gone over to Vista Business yesterday...

I have a HP DC7600 PC, with a P4 3.4Ghz, and 2.5GB of RAM.... It's a clean
build, and I have used the wizard to get my setting and files etc from my
old Windows XP machine.... Office 2003 Pro, Adobe etc....., the machine is
now fully patched and updated....

I have noticed that my hard disc seems to be for ever blipping away..., in
fact it's thrashing away right now as I write this post....

I can't see any thing with task manager....

Any body out there know what the problem is....?, it's starting to drive me
bonkers...

Regards

Relax, it's just doing it's thing, like any good operating system.

There are various things it could be. Most likely is the new indexing
service, which will search for text strings in almost any file on your hard
disk. It's extremely useful. At the moment it is building the index for
the first time - after a few days it will settle down.

Vista also uses Superfetch, which looks at your useage patterns and preloads
into RAM files that it thinks you will want.

Then there's the defragger, which runs automatically once per week.

Finally, every so often Vista shuffles the files around on the hard disk to
optimise the load time.

I don't understand why you find disk accessing so irritating. It's not like
it's fastened to a body part or anything, is it?

When you first start using Vista, it indexes all the files. You will notice
the CPU working at 100%. It is nothing to worry about, and in its own sweet
time will settle down.

Sorry colin, I replied to the replyer! It is doing a thing called "indexing",
and will eventually settle down. Don't worry about the CPU working at 100%.
It is a part of Vista setting itself up for quick finding.

Nethertheless, this would be a good place to look.

Click on 'Show processes from all users' on the 'Processes' tab, and select
the 'I/O writes' /+ 'I/O Reads' columns (via View>Select Columns) to see the
processes responsible for the disk access

And if you haven't disabled "System Restore", the VSS writer will be busy
saving your occupied disk sectors to a reserved area on each enabled disk (so
you can restore previous file versions when/if needed) :)

Hello Colin A,

Download and run Process Explorer. It will tell you anything you wish to
know. It will monitor and show just about anything you wish. You can also
have Process Explorer replace Task Manager if you wish.

Have a nice day.

You do know that's not how "copy-on-write" works, right?

I am also experiencing this issue. I thought for sure the Raptor drives
would be able to keep up with just about anything, but Vista is a killer on
this drive.

Just doing nothing in the O/S, and then 100% disk access for extended
periods of time. This is on a "clean build" with no overhead.

Additional suggestions?
