Upgrade Vista Premium to Vista Business

T

tsabboud

I purchased a new computer 3 months ago that included Vista Home Premium. I
have installed all of my software and have configured the system the way I
want it.

Now, I have to move my computer to my small business and add it to my
domain. To do this I have to have either Vista Business or Ultimate.

I purchased the Vista Business Upgrade but now I am conerned that installing
it will force me to reinstall of my apps including MS SQL, MS Office, ACT!,
Adobe Acrobat and more.

Does anyone know (with certainty) whether upgrading Premium to Business will
cause me to have to reinstall all of my apps or will it simply leave the
programs on my machine as they are and I will be ready to go after upgrading?

As long as you do not perform a clean install (and/or reformat the hard
drive), an in-place upgrade will leave your previously installed
applications in working order.

Nevertheless, always remember to back up before upgrading.

The problem comes in that the isn't an upgrade path from Premium to Business.
This means you would have to do a clean install which will mean reinstalling
all of your apps. Premium to Ultimate allows an upgrade install that
shouldn't delete any of your previous files or applications (emphasis on
shouldn't...always backup before doing an upgrade installation just in case).

See if you can trade in your Business upgrade disk for an Ultimate upgrade
disk. Otherwise you will have to accomplish a clean install to get Business
on your machine.

Of course you you are needing to do a 32 bit installation to a 64 bit
installation (or 64 to 32), you will have to do a clean install anyway so the
above doesn't really matter.

Charlie,

Thanks for your reply.

The reason I have concerns about upgrading from Premium to Business is due
to a chart on MS website
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Wi...e05f-4d2a-4af7-a168-9242f9093bb81033.mspx#ELD

Checkout the link "What installation choices are available to you?"

This chart shows that upgrading Premium to Business should "Do this - Clean
Installation"

I called MS tech support before posting on this newsgroups and the tech said
"...as long as you install the upgrade, you 'should be' ok..." but he would
not give me the answer with 100% certainty. He seemed unsure.

I was told by someone else that there is no 'upgrade path' from Premium to
Business and that I needed to do Ulitmate. This does not make sense to me
since Business is an upgrade.

Have you had experience with this kind of upgrade? Also, if I go through
with it, should I install while I am logged in to the existing Vista Premium
operating system?

Thanks,
TSAbboud

Yeah, that's what occurred to me. There are features in Home Premium
that don't exist in Business (Media Center, DVD Maker, Movie Maker).
Ultimate has all the features of Business and Home Premium. I can't
tell for 100% certain that Vista Business will refuse to upgrade a
Home Premium installation, since I've never tried it. But I'd be
rather surprised if it worked.

Hi tsabboud,

You asked a similar question on 2/8/2008. Refer to that post and both mine
and Mick Murphy's answer. In short, the only upgrade from Home Premium is to
Ultimate - any other version needs to be a clean-install. Should you decide
to, you can clean install Vista Business by following the procedure given in
my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in the newsgroup
'Windows Vista Installation and Setup' , (dated 9/21/2007), link given below.
Note that in this instance you WILL need to reinstall your applications so,
as stated in my other post on 2/8/2008, your best option would be to upgrade
to Ultimate if you do not want to reinstall them.
