heapdump (and javacore) files littering my desktop

For some days now, when I boot my WinXP (SP3 but was SP2 when the
problem first occurred) system, the desktop is filled with heapdump
and sometimes, as I recall, javacore, files. I can't get rid of them.
When I try to delete them via Windows Explorer, I get a message that
the files aren't found. I can select them on the desktop and delete
them but even if I also get rid of them in the recycle bin, they
resurrect on reboot. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
