Favorites will not delete on desktop

By mistake I placed Favorites on my desktop. I have deleted them there a
number of times, dragged them to the Recycle bin, or right clicked the mouse
and deleted them there and then again emptied the Recycle bin, but on each
start up of the laptop, they are there again.

Since I have many Favorites they are now cluttering up totally my desktop.

Why can I not get rid of them on the desktop? What I am missing? Never had
such a thing before!

I am using Windows XP Pro.

Try a System Restore to before you made the mistake.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

Try moving them to the folder that they belong in (your profile). Favorites
are a System Folder and doesn't obey the rules for normal folders.

I deleted the contents of the Favorite folder (I had it backed up a few days
ago earlier on an external disk), then deleted 1 more time all the favorites
on the desktop and this time it worked. I shut down, restart and no more of
all these favorites on my desktop.

But if it should ever happen again I know now to put them all back into the
Favorites folder as suggested.

Thanks for your help!

It may help if you explain what you did exactly.

That's an indication of possible registry corruption.
E.g. Favorites in User Shell Folders may be pointing to your Desktop.
It's quite easy to put the Favorites _folder_ on your Desktop,
e.g. just drag it there but I think something must have gone wrong
in the registry if your bare Desktop is now the Favorites folder.

Since shortcuts are getting regenerated I think it could also imply
that all the information needed to regenerate them is in the registry
somewhere too. E.g. that's how IEAK versions install their default
shortcuts. However, there are other possibilities too, involving copying.
Running FileMon, during the boot if necessary, could help clarify how
the files are being regenerated.

Since I have many Favorites they are now cluttering up totally my desktop.
