Heading 1-9

I am currently using MS Word 2000. Is there any option in the application
where I can limit Heading levels. I want to have only Heading 1-5, I have a
file and when I format the template etc., it brings till level 9. I know word
does not let delete headings. Is there any option in Word to keep only
heading 1-5.

Thanks for the help.

Word templates always contain all the built-in styles. In Word 2002 and
above, you can select which are "available," which limits the listing in the
Styles dropdown. In Word 2000 and earlier, you can "delete" built-in styles
from the "Styles in use" list in Format | Style (which is the list used for
the dropdown). By default, the list shows only Headings 1-3, Normal, and
Default Paragraph Font, none of which can be deleted, and unfortunately this
also applies to any other heading styles that make it onto the list.

Note that "deleting" built-in styles resets their factory defaults,
which may be undesirable. A different way to clear the Styles dropdown
(and the "Styles in use" list) is copying and pasting document
contents into a new document (using the same template); this will
preserve the style definitions.

My assumption (perhaps erroneous) was that the OP wanted to remove Headings
6-9 from the list because they were not in use; if so, a reversion to the
default format would not be a problem (especially since they probably hadn't
been modified in the first place).

Good point. However, I just recalled another issue, namely, that the
built-in heading styles entirely resist "deletion": In Format>Style,
the Delete button is greyed out, and in the Organizer, you get an
error message trying -- and the styles remain in the "Styles in use"
list.

Which is exactly what I said in my original post:

By default, the list shows only Headings 1-3,
Normal,
list.

True. In other words: copying and pasting into a new document is the
only way around it.
