HD damage or ?

N

Navyguy

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running IE8 with XP, SP3 , Windows
Firewall, Avira antivirus, Spybot (for updates only), Spywareblaster,
ATF and Hive Cleanup and all the programs work well together and are
up to date.

Tonight, I turned the power off too soon while the computer was still
powering down. I can still for the present at least logon to the
Internet; however each time I’ve done so Chkdsk pops up and starts to
scan the system. I cancel it and then it lets me in.

I’ve tried powering it off and back on and also selecting F8 and
trying the last settings that worked but it still does the same thing
and Chkdsk comes up. Is there a way to fix this so that my system is
back to normal or have I seriously damaged the HD beyond repair?

The only other issues in the system that I’m aware of are that Spybot
won’t complete its passive immunization. This happened before and it
cleared up with the next update.

I also have a warning from Avira after scanning the system (it shows
up every time):

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
\9fb5ed881f4ba5e862205ff43febecec\BITD.tmp
[0] Archive type: CAB SFX (self extracting)
--> _sfx_0012._p
[WARNING] The file could not be written!

Lastly, I’ve been getting this intermittent message lately when I log
on:

“To free up disk space Outlook Express can compact messages. This may
take up to a few minutes”. I have Outlook but I don’t use it.

Thoughts/ Suggestions?

Thanks,
Robert

1: Let CHKDSK run its course. It will take an hour or so.

2: Download the free version of this tool. Check for updates first and
then run a full scan.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

3: If you do not use Outlook Express but see the compact prompt, it is due
to another program interfering. Is Windows Search installed? You have to
tell Windows Search to stop indexing OE.

In the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check
box for Outlook Express.

Corruption not HD damage.

net stop wuauserv

rename
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
to
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.bak

net start wuauserv

CHKDSK C: /f

if it asks if the OS should run Check Disk and startup, choose Yes and reboot.

You can keep; C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.bak
or you can delete it after a week. When you do delete it, you will no longer have the
Avira CAB SFX error.

I really do not think this is a malware issue so if I am right, running Malwarebytes is
superfluous.

Obviously Avira is is scanning inside a archive file and it can't can't extract and write
the files to be scanned so it generates an error.

There is a way to cancel this, using the Run command I believe. I did

You're thinking of: chkntfs /d (chkntfs /? will give you all the options)

Chkntfs displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time.
The /d switch restores the machine to the default behavior; all drives are
checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are dirty.

The OP should let chkdsk run.. He encountered corruption by turning off while still powering
down. Chkdsk /f can correct a lot of the problems. David's answer will fix the rest.

Agreed, 100%. I mentioned it because the last time I did that was
because I'd screwed up. I hit the wrong button and scheduled a bootup
checkdisk when that wasn't what I wanted to do. LOL

I downloaded and ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program and did a
full scan of the C: drive and it found:

C:\Windows\reggenieonuninstall.exe

I removed it successfully

Then let Chkdsk run this time. It never got past 1 of 3 however and
stayed in a loop all night until I canceled it.

Prior to this, the other night the computer went straight to the Boot
Device menu right after powering up. I didn’t touch a thing.

Keyboard was locked up with the unlined number flashing. After
pressing Enter a number of times it finally released and Chkdsk came
up. Then Windows flash, and logon screen.

After restarting, Windows shutting down>Dell flash>Chkdsk (cancelled)

I tried looking for the Indexing options to modify/clear the check box
for Outlook Express but I can’t seem to find it. Is it under a
category? under Admin tools?

@David H. Lipman – sorry for sounding stupid but where exactly am I am
suppose to type the commands? At the run command? I did start the
procedure but when I typed rename it didn’t recognize it?

Willl try David suggestion but where do I type the comands?

Since Chkdsk wasn't able to complete do you think that Chkdsk /f would
function? If so, what should I do and how?

Thanks,

I'm 99.9% sure this is software related. Have you tried system restore?
Did you let chkdsk finish? I've heard of outlook express causing
problems before.http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpresstroubles/Outlook_Express_Tips...
You could also try running chkdsk/f from the command prompt. Ther are
several registry repair programs out there. I use System Mechanic Pro
you can download a 30 day free trial from here.http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/System-Mechanic-Profe...
I liked it so much I ended up buying it
Just make sure you back up your registry before you do any repairs.

I didn't try System Restore as that is a last resort but I had thought
about doing one although I'm not all that sure it would correct the
problem. It's still an option though and I make regular restore
points.

The registry prompt does seem like the other good suggestion but just
need to know how to go about it?

Thanks,
Robert

The hard drive has not been damaged but it is essential that you let chkdsk
run to completion
even if it takes several hours

Get the disk drive manufacturers hard drive test program and run that to test
