Have Outlook from Office(XP). Network icon has X

I have an icon in the bottom right hand corner of my Outlook window that
shows what I believe to be a network icon. It is "X'd". My network works
for email, but I need to hit the "Send/Receive" button to active sending and
receiving. When I do that it works. I have previously set Outlook to
automatically send/receive every 10 minutes and that option is still
selected, but doesn't happen. What is the reason for the "X'd" icon and how
do I get the automatic send and receive to work. When I write a new email
and hit "Send" it doesn't go until I hit the "Send/Receive" button.

That means you have the "Work Offline" option checked. Click File and
uncheck Work Offline.
