I have to use a static IP at home and a dynamic IP at school, is there any
way I can setup a hardware profile to switch back and forth automatically or
do I have to do it manually?

I had to do this for a friend a while back. The easiet thing to do is setup
a dual boot option at startup. I would name them Home and School and that
way when you start up you have the proper profile loaded.

Sure, that'll work but it's way overkill.

One way is to create two batch files and leave them on your desktop.
One labled Home, one labled School.

Remembering the commands IPCONFIG /release and Renew etc....

XP has built in support for this situational and these overly complicated
suggestions are unnecessary.

Open Network Connections from Control Panel.
Right click and select properties for the connection.
Highlight TCP/IP and click properties
On the General Tab select Obtain an address automatically and Obtain DNS
automatically.
Select the Alternate Configuration Tab.
Select User Configured and enter the IP address etc. for home.

The computer will connect dynamically at school. It will use the static IP
at home (after a small delay) when it does not find a DHCP server.
