CURRENT SYSTEM:
Dell Inspiron 8000
Windows 2000 Pro

ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL:
Windows XP Pro Upgrade

MY EFFORTS: (1) Boot up computer, (2) Insert new MS Win XP Pro Upgrade disc,
(3) close drive.

RESULT: CD does not run automatically.

MY EFFORT: "Start/Run/d:\setup.exe"

RESULT: "Please insert disc."

CHECKS:

Three other cd's open and run automatically on this drive. Virgin cd's open
the CD-maker automatically. Clincher: Win 200 Pro launches and runs setup.

MY EFFORTS: Uninstall all firewalls and popup blockers and virus
protections. Disable Norton. Reboot.

RESULT: No change.

MY EFFORT: Purchased another new copy of Win XP Pro Upgrade from a different
vendor. - all the same as above.

RESULT: All the same as above.

Please advise. Many thanks.

When was the last time it was actually known that the cdrom
drive was working? Or the last time it was given some routine
maintenance, such as checking that the laser lens was clean?
If replacement is needed, cdrom or cd-rw drives are relatively
inexpensive these days.

I repeat:

cd's open

Thanks. Yes, I have done that about 45 times since posting.
Have also entered BIOS to ensure that CD is in first boot position.
Have overlayed that with an F12 manual selection of CD as boot drive.
It spends maybe a minute trying launch - lots of clicking and loud whirring,
with the drive light active - and then it gives up and opens 2000 Pro from
the HD.

The biggest mystery is that it launches other commercial cds and formats
virgin cds; it even runs the startup and offers to reinstall 2000 Pro from
its cd.

And I have two brand new blue-box copies of XP Pro, purchased from different
stores, one on-line, one bricks-and-mortar, both made in Puerto Rico, from
the same (manufacturing?) "Team," but from different (manufacturing?)
"lines." They both behave identically, as described in my original post.

Tried the win cd in another sys, ie booting from it?
If it boots in another sys then either the drive is faulty or theres a
connection problem
You could also try hardware devices removing the cd device, rebooting and
allowing it to be reinstalled.

Are you able to copy the CD to the disk? If so, you might want to try
installing it from the hard drive.

Yup.
It works fine in other systems.
Other cds work fine in this one. Even the Win 2000 re-install disc runs set
up in this drive.

Is your win2k cd a full retail version or is it a Dell OEM version?
I (could be wrong) but 'believe' you need a full retail version, not
upgrade, of winxp to upgrade an OEM version.

Yeh, I considered that, too, so called DELL before buying anything. I made
them look up my original purchase docs to verify that I could, in fact use
the UPGRADE version.

Sigh.

I'm sure I've seen MSVP posts stating an upgrade could'nt be used on an OEM
version.
It would'nt be the first time a support 'tech' has got it wrong.
I know an OEM winxp home cannot be upgraded without a full retail winxp pro.

Try posting the Q to public.windowsxp.setup_deployment

You may NOT use an OEM CD to perform and upgrade. You may perform an
upgrade TO an OEM install.

D

DL

There was a specific MSVP post stating 'an OEM winxp home cannot be upgraded
without a full retail winxp pro'

B

Bob I

That statement as you have written it, is incorrect. A couple of issues
here
1. Since you have not quoted the entire statement, you are not including
context.
2. There is not a MSVP, only MVP (from Most Valuable Professional)

D

DL

2) typo, thinking of MS at the time
1) I pulled this off a prev.post, which I didnt keep a record of, the
context was the same as in this thread
ie someone with an OEM installation of winxp home, using an upgrade version
of winxp pro

B

Bob I

2) OK
1) Still doesn't make it correct. Fact OEM doesn't/can't perform an
upgrade. Upgrade PRO CD will upgrade HOME. Home will not upgrade Win2K
Pro, must have Pro. But the crux of the matter is that the statment as
you quoted it, is incorrect.

D

DL

Perhaps I'm being thick?
Fact OEM doesn't/can't perform an upgrade.
I didnt say this.

So will / does a retail box 'upgrade version' of Winxp Pro upgrade an
existing Dell OEM installation of win2k
