harddisk format

Hello.

i have a strange problem with my pc... after having a virus i
decided to format my 2 harddisks... the problem is that when
installing XP the pc will freeze at a certain point and not respond,
so i tried to install Linux and got the same problem, is it a virus
remaining in there despite the formating of hard disks?, and if so, is
there a way to get there using a program without needing to have a
system installed ?..... hope someone could help with this strange
problem.. thanks.

Mosat likely a hardware problem...

Run a RAM test etc.

Are you sure a virus has infected the PC - how do you know? The best way to
get rid of a virus is to (with the PC powered off) disconnect one HDD
altogether and run the HDD manufacturers "zero fill" utility from a DOS boot
disk (note that this should be created from another machine which has had
nothing to do with the infected one and I suggest that you write protect the
floppy as well - if this is possible). These utilities are downloadable from
the HDD manufacturers website and in the case of my Maxtor drive for
example, its called Powermax. You will then need to disconnect the zero
filled HDD, connect the other HDD and do the same with this drive. This will
completely obliterate any data/viruses on each HDD so I hope you'd already
made full backups before the virus came along.
