harddisk problem

Dear hardware experts,

I've got a laptop harddisk from a friend of mine. It has a cluster problem.
There was windows 98 installed on the hdd and it's Toshiba 4GB HDD.

I've tried everthing. first a windows format didn't work. It took hours
repairing each cluster which started from cluster 9000 and when it was at
16000 it was still busy.
Then a format in Partition Magic which worked but when I tried to install
windows98 it gave error during installation.
Then Fdisk and repartition the hdd worked but when trying to format the disk
the cluster repairing process reapears. I partitioned the hdd in two parts
one of 2.5 GB and the other 1.5GB the second part was able to be formatted
while the first one I got the cluster problem.

Finally I tried a low level format using ontrack "dataEraser" which also
gave an erro on the disk. Now it really works out on my nerves. Is this
harddisk defect? Or is there still something to try?

best regards,

it's time for a new harddrive!

if a low level format does not fix it..it's just plain bad

Piet den Dulk,

I think you have tried everything to get this drive to

Try it one more time in Partition Magic.

Boot into the PM disk...delete all partitions...then check the drive
there for errors.

Have a nice week...
