What you describe is expected behaviour. XP doesn't come with tools to
merge or resize partitions.

If you want to set the laptop to one single large partition using the XP
tools, you have to remove all partitions on that disk and recreate what you
want. Then, format the resulting partitions and reinstall everything.

The only way around this is to use a 3rd party partitioning program, such
as Partition Magic, which does support resizing partitions.

firstly, i hope that you read the MS kb on the use of diskpart.
There is a fundamental method
that is required to accomplish the end result and each command
requires you to select the exact object before committing a command

i don't remember all the commands avail, but it is likely there
is one to extend the c drive. But the kb would be helpful for
you to so print it and review carefully.

Go to start, run and type cmd
At the prompt type diskpart
At the diskpart prompt type help to see avail commands.

But again read the KB by MS. Also, these link may have some help
for you as well.

You cannot extent the system or current boot volume on basic disks.
