I have just formatted my hard drive as there was an amount of corruption
throughout. I rebooted using a restore disk that i received when i bought my
computer a few years ago (from carrera ssc, now don't exist). I chose the
option to reboot but save all of my files. The reboot went fine but i cant
access any of the files from my old user account, yet all of the other
accounts are fine. My account was the administrator account and contained
all of my music and picture files! I seems that they have'nt been deleated
though as my hard drive usage is still reading the same volume as before the
format!

Can any one help me i really would lve all my music back!

Thanks

Hey darren

Right is the user account still visible in the following path

c:\documents and settings\

If it is then the structure is still there. Take it the music was in your
old my document\my music folder

If it is still there you should be able to get access. You will need to
disable simple file sharing which you need xp pro for

Go to any folder choose tools. options. view and scroll to the bottom and
you will see it. Un tick the box and click ok.

Next up navigate to c:\document and setting and right click the folder for
the old account. Will be the log on name and choose properties. security and
a personal properties screen will pop up. On the top box labeled "Group or
user names" ensure your is in the group and ensure full control is ticked.
This will give you complete access to the folder. IF it is not the click add
and enter your user name
and click ok and tick full control.

If this does not work you need to take ownership which is a bit more
complex. Try this solution and let me know how you get on

Here's something that works for me - well most of the
time, anyway.
When restoring PC do NOT use the same exact user ID as when
the PC was first installed - Use a variant. Try adding a
letter or a number.
Open up the computer manager and open the users and groups
area, declaring yourself as administrator and the old
account as power user.
Close Computer manager, then check to see if the old user
folder is still there. If so then right-click, select
properties, sharing (or users), modifying access policies to
allow full access. Close properties. Close explorer.
Restart. Full access should now be allowed.
