I have ask this question on another forum but got no replies du to the fact
that it was not the most plainly ask question so I will ask again.

i open my computer and left click on the "C" drive icon instead of the page
expanding to show me the list of folders the search page comes up complete
with puppy trying to dig his way out. if i right click on the "C" drive icon
i get a list of selectable options the first item on this list is search it
formally was open followed by explore and then search somehow this list has
got scrambled the only thing i have done is to install adaware pro and i
think this must be the culprit unfortunately i do not know how to fix.

Hey Jack,
this is odd as far as what it is doing but it sounds like a hijacker of some
sort. I guess what I would ask next is does it do this to any other folders
or files that you try to open?

No it's not a hijacker. This is not an uncommon problem. See Patti's
response for a solution.

Hi Jack,

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory" feature for folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321379
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

(Courtesy of David Candy)

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

Start - Run - regedit.exe Open the left pane to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
highlight that and in the right pane double click (Default) and enter
the exact four characters
none

Repeat at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
in case they are damaged too
