Folder Options Issue

I am suddenly having trouble with opening Word and Power Point documents in
Win XP SP3. Fro a while clicking on a Word document opened it--in Word Pad
instead of Word. I went to Folder Options and reset (I thought) it to open
doc files with Word. I did not notice that the extension I saw there as DOC
expanded to DOCHTML. Meanwhile WOrd documents I saved now showed up with an
icon other than the one for Word. Still can't figure it out.
Now when I click on a PPS file I am asked what program I'd like to use to
open it. Well, what happened to Power Point, which has been doing that job
for a few years now? It still shows up in Programs. But when I go to
Folder Options, File Type there is no PPS extension. When I click on the
PPS file anyway and answer the What PRogram question by choosing CHoose
form a List, the "Recommended choice" is, well, Power Point. The one that
does not show up in Folder Options. So I chose Power Point and now it seems
that PPS files are being opened by Power Point. Problem apparently solved.
But what is this all about? Is this the Twilight Zone?? Any idea what the
&%@(% is going on? Why don't DOC and PPS extensions show up in Folder
Options?

Thanks. Actually, that item (on my PC it is Do not show hidden files and
folders) was already unchecked. Same with Hide extentions for known file
types.
