Hi there,

I've got a Dell Dimension 2100 with XP Home and it would not do a defrag, error message saying disk had to be checked.

Went to do chkdsk c:/f and it accepted Y for doing it on restart, but never does the actual chkdsk.

Then I went to diskmgmt.msc and the hard drive does not show there. The CD shows, but not the hard drive.....

What gives?

Thanks,

Gordon

Looks like hard drive failure. Identify the manufacturer
and download the right diagnostics. We hope you have
a good backup routine.

If the HD is diagnosed as OK, run CHKDSK at boot
with the box checked to "fix errors automatically" and
repost results in this thread.

Go to run, type:cmd In cmd type: CHKDSK C: Chk the results..Next,type:
CHKDSK C: /R Agree to restart, type: DiskPart In DiskPart, type: list disk
Type: list volume Type:HELP For all cmds, once thru, type: EXIT Restart pc.
Also,if youre going to test the hd,at the hd mfg web site, get the MS-DOS
utility,
install to MS-DOS formatted floppy, boot pc to floppy, run tests,a cd version
might be available.

My guess is, you didn't scroll down the Diskmgmt window far enough
to see the hard drive entry. The Dell probably has several partitions
on it.

Think about this logically. Your computer is booted. It is working
OK. You have a C: drive. That is what you booted from. So the C:
drive exists and is currently bootable.

For more info on chkdsk, you can look here.

Hi Andrew,

Did the basic chkdsk c: and came up with error on step 1...."read only..."

Did the diskpart - list disk and the list was empty...

I input the chkdsk c: /r and it would not work...

I checked eventvwr.msc and scrolled down and the "logical disk manager" entered a stopped state....

My best guess is that the hard drive is skewered??

Thanks,

Gordon
