Hangs on MUP.SYS

I boot Windows XP Pro and it hangs after the splash
screen and before the Login screen. I can boot in Safe
mode, but there is a 1 to 2 minute delay when it loads
MUP.SYS (but it is ultimately succesful in Safe Mode)

I have the Windows Update for MS-Blaster (823980) and
have performed a Virus Scan using Norton Virus Definition
files from 8/27/03, so I do not think that it is a virus.
Check disk found no issues and memtest86 found no issues.

Can you help?

MUP.SYS is the last file loaded when you boot Safe MOde, so what is
happening is something in the initialisation of the system after the
files are loaded. The probability is that this relates to some driver
that is bypassed in SAfe Mode. And I would start by disabling devices
in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager (double click the
device and select 'Do not use this device (Disable) in the bottom drop
down.

Simplify out any out of the way device, keeping just hard disks, their
controllers and the display adapter and Monitor. If things are still a
problem, the display is prime suspect. Run MSconfig.exe and on the
boot.ini page select /BASEVIDEO and exit to try a normal boot. If that
woks, update with the latest video driers from the makers site (not
Windows Update)

Thanks for the help. I modified the
msconfig.exe/Boot.ini to use /BASEVIDEO and the computer
will boot fine now. I guess that means that I have a
conflict between the driver I am using and the monitor or
the video card and I cannot seem to fix it
from this point. I have a "Samsung SyncMaster 192N"
monitor that does not seem to have driver on the
installation CD or on the Samsing website. Any ideas?

Only that it is not the monitor that is at issue, but the video card (or
chips on the motherboard) that it connects to. And something is wrong
with the drivers for that. Going to Control Panel - Display - Settings,
click Advanced and look on the Adapter page *ought* to tell you what it
is, but I am not certain if the information is there if you are in
BASEVIDEO

I am back up and running. I booted with base video and
downloaded a new driver for my nvidia card, performed the
self installation, and rebooted. Worked like a champ. I
am wondering if MS AutoUpdates downloaded a new driver
that replaced the original.

Thanks for all of your help - I will certainly come here
again when I get into trouble again.
