I don't see how his reply was at all sarcastic, but your concerns are
starting to border on paranoia.

i was searching for websites to buy half life 2, here on virgin
megastores
it
gives a link to a legal document mentioning subscription charges,
does
this
apply to half life 2 or just the additional games in the package. I
cannot
find i website selling just half life 2, they are all selling it in
packages,
any ideas where i can just buy half life 2 in the uk.

Half life 2 is a commercial game you just purchase it once. There
are
no
subscription charges.

It does work on Vista.

Apparently, the purchase of the game requires a Steam account in order
to
activate the game. If you read the terms, it also states you may be
asked
for billing information but the subscriptions it mentions are
subscriptions
of choice. in other words, beyond the creation of the Steam account,
you
are only required to pay for a service, subscription, content, etc.
that
you
choose and this would appear to be over and above the purchase of Half
Life
2.
The wording on the agreement is somewhat ambiguous in that regard but if
it
does and it bothers you could back out and perhaps decline the purchase.

Micky, I certainly didn't mean my reply to be sarcastic. That was not my
intent and I sincerely apologize if that was how it struck you. My response
was offered up as an option that you could simply back out or decline, if,
when presented with the option to give personal information or credit card
information was required, something you had already stated might be an issue
for you.

Have used Steam since it came out, it is run by Valve software.

To clear a few doubts up.

The company is reputable, do not spam and Steam allows a lot of games to
be downloaded at decent prices, payment by credit card appears perfectly
secure, paypal is very handy and Steam staff are helpful if you have
problems with a download.

Half Life is an original Valve game so is a little different than some
of the others.

Download the Steam client from www.steampowered.com first and read up on
the download packages for best value.

You use the Steam client to download or to register games bought on CD.

If you buy Half Life 2 (for example) you can then download that to any
machine you install the Steam client on but you can only play on one
machine at a time, so for example you can have one machine in your
house, one in your office and one in your Caribbean retreat and anything
you bought via Steam will follow your login account, so you don't really
need backups either, but DO NOT let anyone else know your account
details or you will lose what you paid for to someone else.

There are no monthly subs or anything, and the ads for relevant products
stay only on the Steam screens. All purchases and the Steam client are
updated through the account so it's a very easy system.

My pleasure.

BTW, if you're into ID games like Quake and Doom they have all become
available on Steam and you can purchase them ALL for $62 a saving of
over $150 :) That a hell of a lot of games for just over £30 :)

Hehe, I hated the idea of Steam at first but they have done very very
well with it and it's a pity some others don't seem as interested in
providing a solid, quality product.

You also get (I think) the tools to run your own server and create your
own maps etc... but that is NOT easy.
