Half life 2 is a commercial game you just purchase it once. There are no
subscription charges.

It does work on Vista.

Half Life 2 will be updated for free (patches and fixes, DOES NOT include
sequels to the game) automatically through your steam account when an update
is available, it works fine on Vista as long as your hardware supports Vista
and the games requirements.

Is it not possible just to install the disc and play the game or do you have
to set up a stream account to update the game?

i was searching for websites to buy half life 2, here on virgin megastores it
gives a link to a legal document mentioning subscription charges, does this
apply to half life 2 or just the additional games in the package. I cannot
find i website selling just half life 2, they are all selling it in packages,
any ideas where i can just buy half life 2 in the uk.

They could use "User" instead of "Subscriber" as this is misleading. The
page does not mention anything about a charge (search the page for
charge and nothing is found)

Steam is just the software that runs lots of different games that you
purchase separately. It deals with security etc... You must have an
internet connection to runs Steam.

You can download Steam from their website (mentioned on the link you
gave). You might find the game cheaper as the prices are in dollars and
at $2 to the £1 you can make some great savings. (You need a credit card
to purchase on steam). All purchases on steam can be downloaded there
and then so you don't have to wait for delivery or go to the shops :)

Apparently, the purchase of the game requires a Steam account in order to
activate the game. If you read the terms, it also states you may be asked
for billing information but the subscriptions it mentions are subscriptions
of choice. in other words, beyond the creation of the Steam account, you
are only required to pay for a service, subscription, content, etc. that you
choose and this would appear to be over and above the purchase of Half Life
2.

sorry for all this trouble and all these silly questions but steam is
definately free software and updates for half life 2 will all be free. Are
charges only for sequels and separate games e.g. half life 2:episode one or
deathmatches

Correct :)

BTW, I purchased "Battlestations midway" via steam for £20.00 when it
was £35-£40 everywhere else.

There are a large number of games offered on Steam, not just Half-life2.

The game is activated over steam automatically (if purchased over steam)
and does not, AFAICR, require any personal info. If purchased on A CD
you have to enter the code supplied with the CD, the game is then added
to your steam account and activated.

FYI, You can still purchase games on CD (from shops) and install them,
you're not restricted to purchasing over steam.

The wording on the agreement is somewhat ambiguous in that regard but if it
does and it bothers you could back out and perhaps decline the purchase.

Im not restricted to ordering through stream, but say i go to a game store
and buy half life two and enter the codes on the back. Will this still
require me having the program steam, can i not just buy the disc and install
and play it like a normal game?

You will still have to install and use steam as it is used to validate
that you have the right to play the game. This is security to stop one
CD being used by more than one person at a time.

I have been using steam for many years with no problems, just install it
and give it a go.

No offense, but if you are that averse to installing the Steam application,
perhaps you should look at buying a different game. As has already been
stated, you MUST have the Steam application to play the game.
