had to underclock

i just put together a machine using a MSI k7t266 pro2
with an XP1800+ cpu
DDR ram and XP pro

it worked fine for several days
then just started locking up solid every half hour or so

i have an excellent cpu cooler and it's in a cool area
cpu temp is a very low 35C !

this bugged me so much that i even did a fresh install
with all different hardware
different RAM, video card & harddrive (all other cards removed entirely)

the machine runs fine if i clock it down to 1267mhz

i even reflashed the bios with a slightly newer one

since the XP1800+ should run ok at 1530 mhz...
this is not a terrible loss but just curious as to what could possibly have
happened?

Possible power supply issue?

Philio,

I pretty much have the same set up as you do and started having the same
problem as have. I underclocked and now it works again. Did you install a
windows update? I don't remember if I did or not. Not sure what the deal
is. I've been running at normal speed for at least 18 months...and now I
just had to underclock like you....hmmm

right from the very beginning the unit seemed a bit flakey
but i got XP installed and applied the updates right away...
it seemed to run ok for a few days but once in a while it would not
boot into the OS.
i applied a motherboard update that i got from MSI
and by the next day the locking up began

*however*

when i went to reload the OS using *all* different hardware
i could not even get the OS to install until i underclocked the system

so that pretty much eliminates the possibility of a driver or update problem

the cpu itself is brand new however the motherboard i got from a friend of
mine
so it had been in service for over a year...
but the guy who gave it to me said he had been using it with no problems

(i guess i better ask him, but i suspect he may only have had a 1200mhz cpu
in at )

thanks everyone for the replies
