had to underclock ...part 2

unbelievable !

i posted the other day that i had to undeclock my XP1800+ to
1267mhz due to lockups etc...

i had even changed my hardware...all except for one thing...
the cpu cooler!

i originally had a physically small unit with a very high speed fan
that worked fine but was way too noisy

i then replaced it with a very large, copper heatsink with a large,
low speed fan...
when i went back to the original heatsink i can again run my system at
1530mhz!

since the cpu temp is about the same...it might have something to do with
the very large mass...
possibly acting as an antenna which must radiate enough RF to cause
instability
problems in the machine

i think i;d rather undeclock than put up with all that noise...
i think it;s time for me to design my own cpu cooler ...

First, thankyou for posting the solution. So nice when people do that.

You may have had hot spots on the chip, where the large cooler didn't
contact good enough to soak it up. Cpu temp doesn't tell you about
that. Case of bad luck, mainly, unless you were less than diligent at
mounting the heatsink. High weight, paste instead of pads, screws
instead of spring, all these things make it a bit less smooth sailing,
accomplishing even contact. Which I believe (but do not know) is more
crucial for AMD than Intel.

Could be that the large heat sink was mucking something up with the
motherboard: bending it slightly to make it go a bit flaky around the
CPU, and then at normal operating temperatures the thermal expansion of
the nearby components plus the force from the weight of the heat sink
threw things off. Another, more likely but related, possibility comes
from Ancra in the previous post in the thread.

PS- why not put the original heat sink back on and stick a low speed fan
on it, either the same size or buy a fan adapter for a larger fan. I've
done both at different times when the fan noise from my CPU HSF was
pissing me off.

i think i;d rather undeclock than put up with all that noise...
i think it;s time for me to design my own cpu cooler ...
by examining the surface of heatsinks with a good magnifying glass
i have definately seen some that looked rather poor...
but the one that caused the problem really looked quite smooth...
it was brand new

anyway i spent quite a bit of time experimenting with all kinds of
combinations of heatsinks and fans and finally ended up destroying the
entire
motherboard !
(which is just fine with me, it was a freebie anyway)
ordered a new one from newegg last night ...(an ECS this time)
i never would have trusted that thing anyway <g>

final word:
mobo was not bad...just lost the bios settings...
cpu cooler in another machine with a slower
cpu!
