grouping

D

my computer is grouping my internet explorer and windows
explorer taskbar objects into one group when there isn't
enough space for the amount of taskbar objects. does
anyone know how to separate the two different taskbar
objects?

K

Kelly

This just doesn't sound right. If you are grouping, there will always be
enough room. If you are not, then the Taskbar scrolls. Check your settings
here: Right click the Taskbar/Properties/Group similar ....... and decide
exactly what it is you are wanting. Good luck!

D

David Candy

Are you sure that it is doing that. You can't tell by how it looks if it's IE or Explorer as each looks the same as the other when browsing the web or browsing the hard drive (type C:\ in IE's address bar). What does Task Manager say.

D

ds3177

going to taskbar/properties/group similar taskbar objects
is not a solution. all that does is break EVERY taskbar
object up so NONE of the programs are grouped together.
and i am sure. in the taskbar, both IE and windows
explorer objects are grouped together under the name
Windows Explorer. task manager appears to be able to
distinguish each group based on the icons in the
applications tab. any suggestions?

Look on the Processes tab. That gives the program actually running. Both IE and Explorer are container programs, they load a web viewer or a folder viewer depending on what they are viewing. Did you try that experiment of c:\ in IE's address bar to demostrate this.

D

i am at the task manager but am unsure as to what i
should be looking for under processes. by typing c:\ i
was sent to the c drive (which is natural since that is
the path that it was set to). both IE and windows
explorer are still "together". no new developments.

You are trying to assertain if Explorer is browsing the web rather than iexplore or iexplore is browsing the local drive rather than explorer. The point of the experiment is you can't tell by looking at the program if it's explorer or iexplore (Internet Explorer) running.

so how do i tell? forgive my lack of information but
could you please tell/explain to me what to do? i
understand the end result but am unclear as to what i
should note and how to get there. also, if the
experiment proves that you are correct, what actions am i
to take afterwards?

Sort the Task Manager Process tab, by Image Name. How many explorer.exe instances you see? And how many iexplore.exe?

If you have Pro type in Start Run

tasklist
and cut and paste the results (right click the taskbar for the Mark - Copy menu)

If Home
type what's in Task Manager (just the name). Sometimes a second instance of Explorer starts and is named for unknown reasons after a folder instead of Explorer. We're more likely to recognise a folder if this is the case (but hey you look too).

D

i have pro. unfortunately, when i type tasklist in run,
the menu appears and disappears a second later. i have
no time to copy the results.

START/Run -- CMD will open the window then type tasklist.

Right click and select "select all" then press enter to copy
the results to the clipboard. Open Notepad and right
click/paste. Save and print as you wish.

But.....Try this command at time you're experiencing the problem. There is only one instance of explorer.exe, which is the shell.

Can you terminate NOPDB which some web pages suggest are the Norton Scheduler (others say it just runs speeddisk at startup).

Also type

cmd /k tasklist /svc

I tried setting IE and Explorer to use the same icon when grouped. It didn't trick it.

Bit of both. The Americians (Bush & Armitage to date and Powell will have a go on Sunday) are attacking the Australian Labour Party at the moment (see link in sig for how Australians are reacting), so I've watched footy (St George won I think as I didn't watch last 15 minutes), then the Glass House (comedy and very funny), then lateline for the latest on interference in our domestic politics. But for the last hour running experiments on taskbars and I read about 30 threads on google and numerous KBs on NT4 et al for Task Scheduler (and I multitasked from 1/2 time onwards).
