Graphics card for Doom 3???

What would be the best card to use with Doom 3? ATI or Geforce?

Doom3 is an OpenGL game. At the moment the best OpenGL performers are
the cards made by nVidia.

"The testing reveals that the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra
GPU offers the best performance for DOOM 3, with GeForce
6800 GT running a close second, outperforming the high-end
graphics chip offered from the leading competitor that costs
approximately $100 more. In the testing, the NVIDIA GeForce
6800 Ultra beat the comparable competitive offering by up to
40%. The GeForce 6800 GT performed up to 70% better than the
competitor's comparable offering. John Carmack, author of
DOOM 3 and pioneer of the Quake engine made a statement:

John Carmack: It should be noted that all of the
modern cards play the game very well, and benchmark
scores should not be the be-all-end-all decision maker.

It should be noted that some of the ATI cards did show
a performance drop when colored mip levels were enabled,
implying some fudging of the texture filtering."

See http://www.hardocp.com/ for test results.

ATi is busy trying to remedy the problem (somewhat) by improving their
OpenGL performance in their drivers - the 4.9 beta release last week
increased the performance by 8% or so, but they have a lot furter to go
to be able to compare to nVidia. Even if they get there, it'll be some
time yet.

As a sidenote: with the upcoming game "Half-Life 2" the roles will
be reversed. The game is a D3D game, and it's ATi which excells there.

Half-Life 2 will be out next month (hopefully!). I'm hanging on till
then, to see how all cards perform under both games by then. Some new
cards may be out then too: the ATi R480, and the GeForce 6600.

With these two games coming out, times are good for hardware
manufacturers - lotta ppl buying processors, memory and videocards
I reckon...

unless you are really into first person shooters
save your money. The game is visually stunning with the right video card.
I like first person shooters so I am happy with it.
The online game is cool to but only four players at a time.

I suggest that you get an Athlon 64 processor(if you don't already
have one) before buying a very expensive video card.

That's not necessary. With a non-Athlon64 and an older video card, you
will STILL see a big performance increase getting a newer card like a
9800 PRO or a 5900 ultra, regardless of your current processor (unless
it's really old and barely within specs).

The article shows that the choice of processor is much more important
with the 6800 Ultra than with the 9800 pro. With a slower video card,
a slower processor won't be such a bottleneck for it.

Doom 3 plays fine on my freshly built AMD 64 3500+ with a Gainward FX
5900XT golden sample @ medium quality with the resolution set to 800 X
600.

Doom3 was developed on a GeForce so I would go for that, for that reason
alone. But the price is about $400 + tax. Also the game is getting
suckie reviews. For $400 I can (and will) get a Xbox with some good
attachments. I think FPS are over for the computer, strategy yes, FPS -
no. IMHO

I have a GE2 right now. I just missed a sale for $29 for a GE4. That's
going to be my video upgrade :)

DON'T BUY A CARD JUST FOR DOOM3.

Doom 3 is a pile of shit. You spend most of your time walking around
unable to see some of the alledged great graphics because there's sod
all lighting. Carmack took DARK and scary to a whole new level. Its so
damned dark you might as well play the game with the monitor switched
off, the end result is the same.

How the hell can you say its visually stunning when most of it is
either pitch black or next to pitch black?
