Good, cheap, internal generic fax modem?

Since I can't seem to get my US Robotics 56k External Voice Faxmodem to get
a dialtone from my Sipura 2000 VOIP adapter, I was wondering if anyone
could recommend a good fax modem (I'm going to stay away from US Robotics.
Every software manufacturer seems to have an exception for them in their
readme file).

How are these?

Well I'm not sure if that rules out a problem with your VOIP adapter....
especially if the modem works fine when plugged directly into a standard
phone line. These days almost all of the cheapie PCI modems (eg those on the
first page of that link) are controllerless or even worse softmodems. Gone
are the days when you could get cheap full hardware internal modems. What
does your VOIP hardware supplier say about the problems you're experiencing
assuming you are plugging in the modem correctly?

I just hope the OP understands that all of the Intel/Ambient chipset PCI
modems listed there are NOT full hardware modems but are merely
controller-less or softmodems despite their claims to be "hardware" modems -
this is a common claim but here's the proof:
http://www.intel.com/design/modems/index.htm and that applies to all the
Intel/Ambient PCI modems (but not external serial port ones which are full
hardware devices using the chipset on the bottom of that page). There is
only a very small range of PCI modem chipsets that offer a full hardware
device they include the Lucent Venus chipset, USR Kermit (as in the frog but
possibly some other USR chips as well) and certain chips by Topic/IC Plus
and Davicom. There are MANY false claims for PCI hardware modems out there
due to unscrupulous sellers wanting to take advantage of the publics general
lack of knowledge in this area - buyers beware.

I think there's still a couple of Rockwell HCF PCI modems about which
although not fully hardware ain't bad e.g semi-hardware.I've used one
for years until DSL and they are even good enough to play online
games(the true test) :)
