Need Help with USR 0701 Fax/Modem setup under XP-SP2!!!! <------------------<<<

Well I'm trying to install a US Robotics 56k external fax/modem on my
PC. It was working under XP-SP1. I recently upgraded to XP-SP2.
Device Manager doesn't recognize the modem. Even pointing at the
drivers, during setup, nothing is recognized.

I haven't used the fax/modem much in the past, but when I need it
(like I need it now), it has always worked.

Is there any trick on getting this to work under XP-SP2???

Is SP2 the problem?

Help Please,

tt

Installing SP2 shouldn't mean your modem is inaccesible. Its much more
likely that its done something to affect your com ports and thats upset
modem detection or the wrong inf is being used. Is the modem detected during
boot - ie does windows ask for drivers? If not, you'll need to go into
device manager and uninstall any traces of the modem from there (or any
yellow exclamation marks present). Then shut down the machine, power the
modem off for 30 seconds, make sure its correctly plugged into the PC and
power the modem on again and boot up the machine. If the drivers are being
asked for then double check that you have the correct inf file ready to be
installed (I'm not aware of any requirement for special modem drivers under
SP2 so the configuration (inf) file used previously should work). At what
stage of the above does the problem occur - is it simply that the
drivers/inf aren't recognised as being correct for the modem even though
drivers are being asked for by the OS?

Paul,

During boot-up, the lights (RD and TR) on the modem flicker on/off,
while the CS light remains on. All light activity except CS ceases
when the "loading windows" screen appears.

Windows never locates new hardware or asks for driver upgrade. No
yellow exclamations in device manager. No modem listed. Cannot add
hardware because windows doesn't display a modem device. Can't get to
the procedure where driver location is asked for.

In the bios, serial ports 1 & 2 are enabled and set to the following:

serial port1 = 3F8/IRQ4
serial port2 = 2F8/IRQ3

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

tim

Since the lights flicker during boot up you clerarly have communication
between the PC and the modem however the fact that no driver is called for
or installed would tend to indicate that some corruption of your OS has
occurred with the SP2 install. The port resources mentioned are standard and
providing you haven't changed windows setting relating to them I suspect the
issue isn't port related (although you could try shutting it all down and
plugging the modem into the other serial port, then turn on the modem and
reboot the PC). Personally I've ALWAYS performed my OS and SP installs under
a minimum configuration or using a CD with the SP built in (if you have a CD
Burner you can make a "slipstream" CD using the SP2 download and your
original CD). You mentioned that you'd upgraded to SP2 - here in the UK
Microsoft have a national rate (minimal cost) helpline for anyone
experiencing problems as a result of an SP2 upgrade. Although I'm sure SP2
itself isn't stopping the modem working, if the Microsoft helpline is
available where you are it might be worth a try.

When you mentioned you cant add hardware, did you try using the add hardware
wizard? Although Plug and Play devices should be automatically detected, the
add hardware wizard will repoll for anything not previously
detected/installed so its worth trying that too. There's a few ideas to try.

Sorry guys. Didn't know what "top posting" was and that it was
a no-no.

Great. One reformee makes the bitching all worth while. Now the
sun is out and the birds are singing. Just don't forget to snip.
You are never wrong to bottom-post, but can often be very wrong to
top-post.
