Re telling the difference between voice and fax answering

I have windows XP home and a 3Com US Robotics 56K Message Modem, external. I
want the answerphone to be able to tell the difference between a voice call
and a fax call so that it only answers faxes, and leaves my downstairs
answer machine to answer voice mails. Also if I pick up the phone and a fax
is being sent., and I put the phone down again, the Message Modem loses the
call, and I miss the fax. I have configured the fax, via the Windows wizard,
to send, and to answer after 2 calls.

Any ideas how to get the Modem to only answer faxes please.

What you are asking for is called "distinctive ringing"? This is not
supported in Windows XP. Workaround is well documented in this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272943

You have only one choice:
1. Obtain and install a 3-rd party device to support distinctive ringing.
