I've used GoBack for some time now. (since Win98) I find it to be an
excellent program and has saved my butt on a few occasions.
Others have covered the disadvantages of GoBack over other imaging programs
so I won't repeat. GoBack does have some distinct advantages. (No reason you
can't do both of course)
If some change you make renders Windows unbootable, restart the computer,
hit the space bar when prompted at reboot, revert the drive and you're back
in business. Total down time < ten minutes. (you could even delete the
Windows directory and recover with GoBack) Nice if your Windows video driver
renders the screen unreadable too. It also has the capability of recovering
a single files or group of files previous version(s) while keeping the
present version. Nice with say a large Word document if you need to recover
something you've deleted while attaining the current state of the document.
You can also create what is called a "GoBack drive" where you can work with
the drive as it existed at a previous date from inside the current Windows
session.
It will return a drive to it's exact previous state i.e... before a software
install or virus infection.
On the down side, the length of the restore history is disappointing with
Windows XP. Under Windows 9x I generally get a month or more of available
dates to revert to. Under Windows XP a week is the best I ever get. I
attribute this to the additional overhead in terms of disk/file activity
involved with NTFS and the XP OS itself. Also it does not replace an
"alternate media" backup. If the drive fails GoBack is of course useless.
In terms of performance degradation, with a Win XP Pro 2.4 GHz. 512 RDRAM
system it is unappreciable. I do a fair amount of video work and DVD burning
and it has not caused a problem. It doesn't seem to slow down the Wife's
Win98 500 MHz. PIII either but that machine really only does light Web work
and word processing. (it worked fine for me on that machine when it was mine
too but I didn't do the kind of heavy processing on it that I do with the XP
machine)
