does anyone know if gmail and outlook are compatible?
I've tried to set it up but I get an error message in
logging onto incoming server and sending test email.
I've put 127.0.0.1 as my incoming mail server (pop3) and
as my outgoing mail server (SMTP), and when I test
account setting it says it can find these servers, just
the other tests mentioned before fail. Any help would be
much appreciated.

You can't access gmail via Outlook, sorry.

That's your localhost - not sure why you're trying to use that.
 
This has now changed and you can access gmail through outlook. Look under
the "Settings" tab on gmail to see how you can configure it...
