Gmail, Outlook and sending message errors

Guest

I'm having trouble sending messages from Outlook. I set up POP access to my
gmail account and used all the correct settings (465 for the SMTP Server Port
Number, et al.) and got the message that Outlook is able to find the outgoing
server but every time it tries to send a test message that fails. I'm told I
need to verify the e-mail address field and I've done that repeatedly and
know that it's correct (my e-mail address at gmail). If anyone has any ideas
as to what might be the problem and how I can fix it, I would greatly
appreciate any assistance.

Thanks so much.

G-mail is not pop mail and you can't use Outlook for it or any other web
mail. Use your browser instead.

Gmail now allows POP3 access to mail - see

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Mary asked:

You are able to use 3rd party pop mail clients with Gmail as of now.

I however am having the same problem, I get the same error as the original poster

What happens when you try to actually just send a message? The test code
doesn't give good error messages (go figure...), so sending is a better
test. What error message do you get?

This is the error message I get when I try to send (I am experiencing
the same problem as listed above as well).

"Task 'pop.gmail.com danchosmap - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B)
: 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending
(SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your
server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"

Please advise!

What version of Outlook do you have? Have you checked the "use SSL" box on
the Advanced tab for your account? If you have checked that but the server
you're connecting to doesn't support SSL, you will get this timeout.

I have Outlook 2002. I tried unchecking the SSL box, but that made
things worse (more error messages). The Gmail help page says to check
the SSL box. I did everything exactly as gmail said to do it. What is
the problem?!?

I had the smae problems. However, the solution is to install the
office2002 sp3. The release notes describe a solution to a bug related
to this. After installing it, I was able to use outlook to send Gmail
emails over smtp port 465.
So this is the solution.
