Gigabit Switch vs router

I have two PCs both with 1000 Mbps cards - can I get gigabit speed to make file transfers between the two PCs if I install the switch downstream of a router /cable modem? Ot will the data have to go "up to the router" and then back down and over to the other PC? I don't care about the speed to network printer, NAS, and internet as it is plenty fast. But would like to see 1Gbps between the two PCs for transferring large files. Or would I have to purchase a more expensive Gigabit router?

Buy a Gigabit router and attach your modem to the router. See if you can get one with mixed ports and put the modem on the 100mbit one - no point in sticking your modem on a gigabit port. Make sure you have good quality cat5 (e?) cable between your PCs. Gigabit is worth it, should get up to 40mb/sec real world no problems.
