Getting back Settings after reinstall

I had to reinstall windows xp Pro over my old one because
of some errors i was getting, but I forgot to get some
old files out of my user folder in the Documents and
Settings folder. The folder is still there, but I can't
gain access to it. I remember my password, but whatever
i try, i can't get it to let me access that folder. Does
anyone know how I can get to it.

If your install of xp was formatted to NTFS then this file
system is fairly secure, so the access settings for your
old files are still inforce, once you have reinstalled
over your old install then your access passwords wont work
as the SAM database is overwritten ! sorry.

My advise is backup vital files onto cd with no access
restrictions !

As long as the files weren't encrypted, you can regain access to the
folders and files by taking ownership:
