file/folder access on network

C

Chuck

running windows xp pro; network working fine with access to my documents
folders on network with no trouble. established remote desktop and in
getting through all the troubles with it, mainly having to establish password
account [later found that can be fixed and has been] I set password and when
asked if I want files private I hit yes. This is not what I want but can't
find any way to remove this setting. network acess and remote desktop work
great EXCEPT I can't access my document folder on main system where these
private files are.
HOW CAN I RESET PERMISSION TO MAKE FILES PUBLIC AND CAN ACCESS MY DOCUMENT
FOLDERS ON NETWORK [sharing tab has private files clicked but greyed out so
can't uncheck it.]

This is partly helpful. This has given me enough info to work aroound most
of the problem. Still has not fixed everything.
Doc & Settings accesses fine. Under that there are various user folders.
Only one specific user is setup on this system and THAT name is still not
accessable. The folders under it are.
If I access through the network to username documents, then it works. If I
go to c:\, doc & settings, usersname...no go, access denied.
IBTW, to access the security tab in win xp pro you also have to be in safe
mode, fyi. I have accessed ALL the folders above, in, and below the specific
dolder that still is maked private giving full access and while all allow it,
the one username folder does not.
IF you can think of why not, let me know. Do I need to set a different user
in the add list such as everyone or the specific user that is my login name
from my laptop to this desktop system?

It sounds like you might have "Simple File Sharing" enabled. Under
Simple File Sharing, folders directly in the "Documents and
Settings" folder are not sharable (along with several others such as
"Program Files").
Double-click on any folder, then
Tools->Folder Options->View.
The last item in the list should be "Simple File Sbaring". Try
disabling it. If you authenticate with a user name that has access
permissions to that folder, then you should have access.

Yes, have seen & read this. Originally I set doc & settings folder to share
along with username folder under it and was able to click on it from remote
computer just fine. Trouble came when setting up remote desktop. I had no
pw on the acct on desktop since it's physically isolated. I wanted to be
able to log in remotely the same way but the default requirement was to have
a password. When I set a pw, the top box on sharing in doc & settings and
the my doc folders under it shifted to private and the box grreyed out
[unsetable].
The original fix you gave worked fine and reset all but the one folder...
doc & setting
username folder
my pics
my music
my videos, etc.

I can access through my doc & settings for username on main pc through
network places, but not username folder going through C:\. In the original
settings fix you referred me to the file said to turn on simple file sharing
and it is on, was on, still on. Do I need to turn that off and the grey box
will either clear or blacken so UI can change it?

If Simple File Sharing is enabled and you attempt to use file sharing
to access files or folders on that machine, then you will be accessing
them as if you were logged into the "Guest" account on that machine.
Perhaps what you need to do is right-click on your "username" folder,
select Properties, and go to the "Security" tab. Make sure that the
user "Guest" (or a group that "Guest" is in, such as "Everyone") has
permissions in this folder. The default is just to have the owner,
SYSTEM, and the Administrators group have access to that folder.

John
