Prior shutdown went ok (no errors). Bring up machine and unable to start the ISP connection (get the hourglass for a moment and then nothing happens) and seems if any attempt to get a filelist fails (no listing and no errors). Do a shurdown or restart and get the following "program not responding" messages

Socket Notification Sink
Respond "End" to all then it takes anywheres from 2 to 6 minutes to shutdown. Restart and sometimes comes up ok and sometimes the same problem. Seems if the problem is still there, it will correct itself in 5 or 10 minutes. I went looking for the gator files and it looks like it may be associated with Internet Explorer.
(1) are the three programs not responding associated with windows XP home edition
(2) any idea what is going on and how to correct it

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

I ought to add to this that you will need to download Spybot
(www.safer-networking.org) to remove the crud its removal leaves behind. Be
warned - it's extremely messy!
