shutdown problem

I am having a shutdown problems with windows xp that I have not been able to
find a solution for.

Very frequently, though not always, when I try to shutdown or restart
windows I get a series of "program not responding dialogs." The series is
generally the same. With my desktop still present I get this dialog for the
following programs: "network associates error reporting service," "McAfee
updater," "Hsm Sink Window," "Ati tray icon application," "DIEmWin," "Acrobat
try icon," and "kmw_run.exe" If I choose to end each of these tasks, then
windows proceeds to the shutdown screen where it hangs again. Then I get two
more "program not responding dialogs": "ctfmon.exe" and "explorer.exe."
After ending these two tasks my computer finally shuts down.

I know what each of these programs is except "DIEmWin" and "Hsm Sink
Window." I'm not sure if the problem is with one of these programs--I have
googled them both and had a difficult time finding out what they are. Or
perhaps the problem is with McAfee Virus Scanner, since the first two program
are associated with it. Or maybe the problem has to do with something else
entirely and these are just symptoms.

Any advice on how to solve or troubleshoot this problem would be greatly
appreciated.

You can attempt to troubleshoot it here:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

If that doesn't solve it - and you don't want to solve it - you can make the
problem "go away" without solving it but I don't normally recommend such
things...

It's not too hard but it does involve editing your registry AND it doesn't
SOLVE your problem - it just makes the problems you're having go away.

Start
Run
Regedit
Go to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
Find:
AutoEndTasks
Right click on that
Modify
Change 0 to 1

That will make those tasks automatically end (or should) but, well, that
doesn't solve your problem - like I said - it just makes them go away. Your
problem is something hanging and causing those to stop responding - perhaps
they're all trying to write to the same memory space as you go to shut down?

Either way - I'd troubleshoot it with the first link long before trying the
second link:

If you do go with the second option:
