Gary, you really should get off telling everyone with a Vista Mail problem
to stop using Norton/McAfee and/or switch to Windows Live Beta. Perhaps
until it gets sorted out they should just use an alternate email program. As
I had mentioned to you in an earlier post I am having similar problems and
use neither of those AV programs. I currently switched to Windows Live at
some ones suggestion and only moments ago had it come up with a not
responding while trying to open a picture file. The very same file opens
immediately in Thunderbird. So I proceeded to try the wmutil, first
compacting and then trying again to open the file, no luck, so tried the
repair option with the same result. Now I know how Betas work, so I also
would not recommend switching to Windows Live either. Suffice it to say I
have honestly tried each and every suggestion that has been provided you
Steve, and many others and it's not working. There has to be some common
denominators with those of use experiencing these issues, but I am not
positive it is in fact related to the AV programs we are using.

My advice is based on solid experience and is not given lightly.
The overwhelming majority of folks who switched to Windows Live Mail
have agreed with me that it is more stable and less buggy than WM.

Of all the regular responders here, we almost universally agree
that Norton/McAfee is bad for Windows Mail.

Since you have only your own experience to draw on (sample size=1),
you should not be attempting to countermand the collective wisdom
that has developed here from the experiences of many users.

And I agree that Thunderbird is a good choice for those who, for
various reasons, are not satisfied with WM or WLM.

Gary, I am not trying to be disagreeable and your help has been
outstanding. I personally do not and have not used either Norton/McAfee
in over 10 years. My point is this, it may me some call or routine in
these programs that may be similar in other programs that those of us
having the continued problems have in common. Since we are having very
similar problems and not using the (problem) AV programs, would you not
agree? I will also point out that I personally never allow my AV to scan
my email as a matter of common sense as it slows the delivery
unnecessarily. Also, even though I have not been a frequent poster, I
have been a subscriber to the MS newsgroups for as long as they have
been available....

The reason why we harp on uninstalling Norton or McAfee is that I
cannot begin to tell you how many people have had their problems
resolved as soon as they fininshed uninstalling them, or their problems
started as soon as they finished installing them. Yes, most definitely
there are other causes for these problems that we have not narrowed down
yet. We start with the usual suspects and go from there. When
everything doesn't seem to work, we suggest using an alternative email
program until MS decides to do something more permant to fix it. If
you look at my site, you will see at the top portion that I do include
alternatives as well as some solutions to the most common problems in
Windows Mail.

Gary is just trying to help as I am. Most of the time is easier to
switch to a new email program or AV than to continually battle with the
same problems of Windows Mail. For each their own though.

First off I would like to apologize if my statements offended anyone. My
intention was to state that perhaps one could say that if they were running
either of the suspected programs they might try uninstalling to see if that
solved their problems. And to say that or use Windows Live Beta would be the
answer is my only issue. As I said in an earlier posits that I am having the
same issue in either Win Mail and Windows Live and do not use those
suspected programs and it seems that I'm not alone. It may well be the
solution for some, but after reading many past posts it seems it might work
sometime only to have the problem reappear again after a period of time. I
certainly know you guys are trying to help and really do an outstanding job.
So lets agree to disagree in friendly terms and find a useful fix.
