Games and dvds keep closing after a few minutes

David

Please help!

I've just installed xp home and had no problems. But now
when playing games or watching dvds they keep suddenly
closing without warning and throwing back into windows.
There are no error messages the programs just exit. I've
turned off the screen saver and disabled all the live
updates etc. There are no programs running in the
background which might cause the problem. But it keeps
happening less than 5 minutes into each game or dvd. Could
it be a problem with my CD driver? or a hardware conflict?

Help....

Hi David,

If those games are installed on your computer, they are
only using the CD at the very beginning to verify that you
are in possession of the CD, therefore it might be a video
issue which is causing your games and movies to CTD.

Try updating your Video drivers using the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

I am too, having this same problem, have spent many hour's in talk's with MS tech support, and no luck, they got me to try many different thing's, even down to changing the graphics card. No luck though, I think MS Win XP is to blame..............
Not sure why it is though.
P.S. You luckier than me, my comp crashes to the desktop within second's of game play.

Well if Windows XP was to blame loads of people would be having the issue.

Format and re-install your system. The 99% guaranteed fix for almost
everything.

Thank's Paul, It don't make a blind bit of difference however,, latest updates for everything, fresh re-install etc, still not work. However some of the error's that are appearing now, appear to be related to XP itself, or atleast service pk1

Probably hardware/driver issue then.

Try doing a check on your RAM, Mike. Odd-ball issues which manifest
themselves in various ways sometimes are the sign of (1) mismatched RAM or
(2) RAM going back. Check the sticks to make sure they're seated properly.
If you have more than one, try running on just one at a time (if it gives
you sufficient RAM) to see if one is faulty.

Hi Chris

Have already run extensive memory test's, using some software MS Tech sent me a URL to obtain the diagnostic software. It check's out fine. Have however tried removing memory sticks/checked to see they seated correctly...............

I'm pretty postive its an XP issue, as this is my second system I have built to use XP, had exactly the same problem's on the original system. This one use's more modern component's, 3200 athlon, 400 fsb, so I deffiantly think its more a issue with XP and it's so called certified driver's...........

Thank's thou for your advic

If you could please quote at least a pertinent point of the post to which
you're responding, it make figuring out what you're answering a lot easier.

We should do a little hunting and troubleshooting here.

Neither you nor David have listed any hardware involved, you've just said
what the problem is, so how about going into Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Event Viewer and click on Application in the left pane. This will
reveal "events" in the right pane, which might include either yellow
triangles with exclamation points or red circles with white X's in them.
Those are warning and errors, and they can be right-clicked to select
Properties.

This will reveal a portion of the error/warning, and give us a clue as to
what area is involved. If you can find either of those items in Events, and
correlate them to the issue you're seeing, perhaps we can point a finger at
the problem area.
