Game problems

Ok I have Windows XP and the game I have, "the 11th Hour", was made a few
years ago and I believe can only be played with DOS or 95/98. So I tried to
start this game and obviously I can't. Is there a way I can? It's starting
to frustrate me. I've read some things about patches. Do I need to find
one? How do I do it? I've looked on lists and my game isn't on them. What
else can I try?

Take a look at :-

or use http://tinyurl.com/gtbbx if the above wraps around

Hi Slemmenes,

7th Guest and 11th Hour have a lot of fans who play it using XP. This article:
http://pub44.ezboard.com/ftheseventhguestandeleventhhourfrm1.showMessage?topicID=236.topic shares some of the techniques they use
to run it successfully.

Here's the complete setup walkthrough as written by "inferno":
http://home.earthlink.net/~infernofilecabinet1/XpSetUpWalkthroughsA_E/7thGuest_Setup.htm

Chris H recommends "going to www.google.com and doing a search for files
t7g*.zip and 11h242.zip. These are updates for 7th Guest and 11th Hour which
are quite helpful.".

Here's some general supplemental information which you should find useful ;-) ...
11th Hour has been made to work using Windows 2000 compatibility mode:
How to use Compatibility Mode: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533

or try using the Multiboot bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html .

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two of the best
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)

I tried to go to Chris' page and do the patch. It gives a link to the patch
but there's nowhere to click to save it or download it or whatever. Am I
just easily confused? I put the disk in I do the whole go.bat and nothing
happens. My screen turns black for a second and then it goes back to the
desktop. There's no specific icon that would lead to believe it is the icon
for the game. Does that make sense?

Hi Slemmenes,

When you say you tried to go to Chris's page, do you mean Google?
If so, were you unable to find any sources for that file in your search?

No, I'm sorry it wasn't chris's page or the google search. That didn't lead
me to much either though. I have played the 7th Guest with no problems on
this computer. The 11th Hour is giving me grief. I went to some link, the
earthlink one, to figur out this patch thing. I click on another link and I
can't download or save this patch. First I do this...
http://www.home.earthlink.net/~infernofilecabinet1/XpSetUpWalkthroughsA_E/11thHr_Setup.htm
Then I click on a link to get the patch and get this.
http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=11h242.zip&ref=ps
no help to me.

Click on one of the Mirrors links, Mirror 1 and Mirror 2 work (I didn't
try Mirror 3).

Hi Slemmenes,

I went to that page that was linked to from the earthlink site.
I don't know why it was no help to you, it has a link to the patch.
There are three download locations (Mirror's) to chose from.

Well that's a blonde for ya. OK I downloaded the patch. My problem though
is when you insert the disc and run go.bat. The setup never starts. The
screen goes black like something will happen and it kicks be back to the
desktop right away. First actually it gives me options because it says this
disk contains more than one type of file and it tells me to choose where to
run it from. Media player, and other places that are no help. Is this
supposed to happen?

Hi Slemmenes,

Are you following the installation instructions provided on the Inferno site?

Yes. I follow the instructions. But I get let down right from the
beginning. The setup never starts. I think this is just hopeless. I just
don't understand how the 7th Guest never gave me any problems. this one is
horrible :( I can't get anything to work.

Hi Slemmenes,

Yes, the 7th Guest and the 11th Hour are two programs which are
impossible to get working on Windows XP. Only a few with a lot
of patience have been sucessfull in getting them to install and play.
