FX5500 and random freeze

I recently installed a FX5500 256mg Graphics card and have had random freezes
eversince, I thought it might be the power supply and I installed a Ultra
ULT31558 500w supply, I still get random freezes.....any other ideas or is
the Ultra not a good power supply, it seems stable on -- using HwDoctor.

Amd XP 2gig
768 Ram
2 hard drives
2 DVD drives

Jerrye,

Have you updated your mobo's BIOS, drivers, etc, lately..? Is this your
mainboard..?
How about the video card drivers, updated them lately, what make or who is
the OEM ie..Chaintech, etc..?

The video card might need the driver updated or reinstalled.. Get the manual
for your mobo from the DFI site and double check your connections , jumper
settings. bios info, FSB settings, timings, etc..
You can use Everest to paste selected info to posts or print for walkin tech
support..
Your PSU looks ok, Farly new.. How about temps, got enough fans to cool the
rig down, overheating can cause probs too..
The more info the better.

Looks to me like graphics card is possible overheating, try popping the
cover. And is the fan on the card still working?

I have updated all of the drivers you mentioned except the mobo and I will go
out and get the updated drivers on that today. Thanks for the info.

Yes this is a possibility......I will check it.....but I would think that
the card would fail if I made it work hard and I cannot get it to fail
on demand, it continues to be random and mostly after a long wait of
inactivity.

Humm, long inactivity? Perhaps something timing out, being disabled due
to powersaving? How is "random freeze" determined? Does not respond to
mouse? Is the mouse USB and are USB ports allowed to be shut off to save
power? (See device manager, USB properties, Power tab) Or perhaps you
have a "bad" screensaver?

It freezes at random times not everyday or every time I leave it alone, but
always freezes after extended period of time. I have checked power shutdown
settings and they are all set to "never" and no screensaver selected. I will
check usb settings. thanks for your help.

Your video cards aperture settings in the bios are they set to 256mb or
showing this for the card..? You might try using your old video card to see
if the problem goes away, your call..?
It might be your mainboards AGP slot is limiting the new card or the new
card is too fast for your system..? |Supports AGP 8x up to 2133MB/sec. and
AGP 4x up to|
|1066MB/sec. bandwidth for 3D graphics applications | See if in Everest,
under motherboard, chipset, AGP controller, see aperture size, is it 250mb..?
Also, see display, GPU and look at the bandwidth..?
Look in the manual to make sure your DFI mainboard and the PSU completely
conform and comply..

As far as overall temps go in the case, try opening the side and use a
household fan to disperse heated air, see if any change occurs. Did you use
thermal paste on the CPU before fitting the CPU's fan housing..?
If there is an air space between the CPU's surface and the fan plate mount,
it won't disperse heat properly either..
