Random STOP Exceptions on WinXP SP2

My system behaviour is really weird! At times, my system runs for days
without a glitch, but at times, it keeps on generating random STOP exceptions
such as DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL,
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA and so on...
Recently (1 month) my system started throwing up BAD_POOL_HEADER repeatedly!
I've checked every sub-system (Storage, Memory, GPU, APU, Mobo), but could
not find any problem! What's driving me up the wall is the frequency of the
STOP exceptions! It's totally RANDOM!

I currently own an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ based system w/ 2 x 512MB Hynix
DDR333 RAM modules working in dual-channel DDR266 config, all sitting on a
Biostar M7NCG400 (nForce2-400) mobo. Storage consists of an 80GB Seagate
Barracuda ATA100 HDD (8MB Buffer) + a 250GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 ATA133 HDD
(16MB Buffer). Graphics and audio are handled by an XFX GeForce 6200 (NV44A)
and an SBLive!.

I did consider power supply problems. My SMPS has the following ratings.
+3.3V:28A, +5V:30A, +12V:15A, -5V:0.3A, -12V:0.8A, +5VSB:2A
That's roughly 280W, which seems *okay* for my rig, right?

Random errors tend to have hardware related causes. Software problems
tend to be consistent, although sometimes the specific circumstances
needed to trigger an error can happen so infrequently that they appear
to be random. This is particularly true when the error is caused by
the interaction between several different software items.

Are you monitoring internal temperatures on your system? Overheating,
perhaps caused by a cooling fan that is operating erratically, could
produce the results you are seeing.

Have you checked out the information regarding your STOP errors at MVP
Jim Eshelman's web page at http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm ?

Good luck

After taking a closer look, you really ought to upgrade your Athlon XP 2000+
in order to get the full bang out of your DDR333 mem.. The CPU you have is
not even in the support list, you need an Athlon XP 3200+ (400mhz), a 3000+
(333mhz) or a Sempron 2800+ (333mhz) for full performance.. You might upgrade
the PSU too, if needed.. Your mainboard should be able to handle up to 3gb's
of DDR333/PC2700 DIMM modules, read the PDF for your board, see link..

Best of luck..

Jaymon,
The site you mentioned gives my power requirements as 259W, whereas my SMPSU
is a 280W unit. The headroom is ~20W! :D I guess I'll upgrade my SMPS to a
350/400W unit after all! Thank you ;)

Hey,
Your welcome..
Hope the New Year brings you good fortune and a new CPU so those DDR333's
run at full speed..
Have a great Holiday..

Did you ever figure out the cause of your problem? Mine won't boot and I
made a Bart PE disk and now I'm getting different messages the same as yours.
DIfferent each time but the same one's. Was it your power supply? My
Samsung laser printer piece of junk that is brand new started crashing my
computer. Possibly it weakened the power supply. Samsung says it draws 320
watts on begin printing. It is on the same and only circuit I have in the
room and crashes my computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes this issue is well documented
